On Thursday, September 25, 2008, I saw Second Skin at a screening at The Calhoun School in New York City and was quite impressed. Second Skin is an honest and real look into the lives individuals whom are actively engaged in MMORPG’s, i.e. ‘Gamers’. The film, however, is not an all inclusive look of those in virtual spaces focusing heavily on gamers especially those involved with World of Warcraft, and Everquest. There are brief mentions of non-MMOG platforms such as Second Life, but not the core of the film. In reality Second Skin is a starting point in the discussion of MMOG’s by exploring the many aspects of gamers and their involvement in these worlds.

After missing the first Second Skin screening in New York City (and all previous screenings), I was delighted to find out there’s another screening this week!  The next Second Skin screening in NYC happens on September 25th, 2008 through the Calhoun School, in the Mary Lea Johnson Performing Arts Center, 433 West End Ave. at 81st St.  You can sign up for tickets through the Calhoun School ($10 for general admission/$5 for students).

I’m really excited to be attending this screening and shortly afterwards will have a full review of the film (I’ll try not to be too biased.)

Second Skin, the documentary that delves into the cross roads of people’s virtual and real worlds has have several major developments. The first is their recent website design (way to go Juan and Chris), the second is their release of behind the scene videos from their hours of filming, creating and developing (I’m featured in their first weekly clip talking about sunsets), but their recent major announcement has been their next premier which happens in New York City! Second Skin will premiere at the ACE Film Festival on September 4^th – 7^th. Tickets are available beginning July 15^th (and I assume they will be sold out quickly afterwards). I’m really happy for my amigo’s at Pure West for their NYC Premier. The sad news is that I won’t be able to make it. While New York City is my home town I will be in Tampa, FL helping run the 2008 SLCC! DO’H!

With the success that the guys over at Pure West Documentaries have been having with Second Skin at SXSW (I wish I was there!), it felt appropriate for me to talk about the music of the film.  While I haven’t seen the film yet, I felt to keep up with all of the excitement, I would indulge myself with the original motion picture soundtrack to Second Skin now available for download.   The composer, David Gregory Byrne, captures the essence of MMO’s with very epic tracks that feel as if it belongs in World of Warcraft, Everquest or any other MMORPG (for you WoW players this means grab a copy of the Soundtrack Add-In.)  Most of the tracks are less than a minute long but there are some pure gems such as Track 7 - "Back in the Game".  You may recognize it if you watch most of the Second Skin action of SXSW on YouTube.  Now that the world has seen it I can’t wait to see the film myself.  Congratulations hermanos!  Good work!

The guys over at Pure West Documentary’s have made it to SXSW and their documentary has produced a lot of attention. Tonight is the debut of their film! I only wish I could be in Austin to see it, but you definately should!
