Online DJ with a Mac - Resources
I get asked every now and then by a Mac user “How Do I DJ off a Mac?” I really wish I had the answer for you (I don’t own a Mac, not by choice!). While I really do wish I had a Mac to test out DJing/Broadcasting there are some software and tools that are Mac specific. An alternative (again not tested) is to also try using boot camp and DJ as you normally would under a Windows system. Here’s some Mac specific software for online DJing and Broadcasting:
- Shoutcast DSP Plugin for Mac OS X, Linux, and FreeBSD - this is the same location you would get the regular Shoutcast DSP for Windows; software that has not been improved on for some time.
- Rouge Amoeba - Nicecast - A fully functional Mac OS tool with pluginable effects. Although it’s not free, $40 is cheaper than some PC equivalent software that has the same features.
- B.U.T.T. - Broadcast Using This Tool, I’ve highlighted before under Windows, but is also available for Mac!
- Native Instruments Traktor 3 - while Traktor is more a DJ related software, you can stream to an Icecast server with it and it’s available for Mac (and PC).

If you are in my position and dedicated to a file format, this switch may be harder than you with, SAM Broadcaster is incompatible with some file formats, namely ACC+ or any .m4a files. While I have not tested SAM Broadcaster with Vista, reports indicate the users of the software prior to version 4.3.4 may experience some problems with the new OS, I highly recommend an update. Your last alternative to performing voiceovers is purchasing a Mac and it’s popular streaming software. [...]
